Gulf News is special for Shiyas Kareem. The newspaper provided him with a rung on the ladder to professional success.

The management professional told Gulf News: “I subscribed to the paper in March 2002. Both my wife, Suja Kareem, and I used to regularly go through the job opportunities advertised in the paper at that time. I was already working in the UAE but found my second job in 2003 after I applied to a job advertisement published in the Gulf News.”

Currently, Kareem is the Group Vice President of corporate planning and MIS (Management Information Systems) for the business segment at a private university based in Dubai.

He reads the Gulf News’ Business pages every day. To him it is the most pertinent section that helps him stay updated in his field of work.

He told Gulf News: “As soon as I pick my copy of Gulf News, I open the Business section and check the exchange rate first. I then read about what is happening in different industries. This helps my knowledge of sectors like media, higher education and healthcare that I also deal with, at work.”

He added: “My favourite part of Gulf News is the technology-related coverage. I like to find out about the latest technological developments and releases in the market.”

At 50, Kareem is not just an avid reader, he is also in tune with what’s happening around the world through social media. More specifically, Twitter. He said: “I am an active Twitter user and keenly follow Gulf News’ Twitter channel.”

The Dubai expat who belongs to the Indian state of Kerala, added: “As long as I am in the UAE, I will be a loyal Gulf News subscriber.”

He has just one more wish.

He said: “I would love it if Gulf News releases a midday paper, too, and sells them at metro stations. So readers like me can get their daily news in the middle of the day too. I would surely purchase it.”
