DUBAI: Living in Dubai doesn’t give you many opportunties to wear a fancy hat, but a day at the races is certainly one of them.

That said it’s important to choose the right style -- something that not just matches your outfit and fits properly but also enhances your character.

Milliners Nazgul Najmi and Asmim Itakinsley who are displaying their creations in the city ahead of Dubai World Cup say brims and fascinators in saccharine tones are the rage this year.

Popular shades

“Expect shades of fuschia, cotton candy pink, liliac, violet and subtle yellows at the Style Stakes,” says UAE-based Turkish milliner Nazgul Najmi who has been making hats for over 10 years now.

The 37-year-old claims she takes just two days to make a bespoke hat. “My handcrafted hats are tailormade, but since I often get last minute orders I also keep some hats ready,” adds Najmi whose creations are currently on display at Urbanist store in BoxPark with pricing ranging from Dh1,000 to Dh4,000. “I’ve already sold 160 hats, and am left with about 30 more,” she says.

Among them is a Dh3,000 pink Mohawk embellished with Swarovski crystals. “It’s my favourite. It took me quite a while to dessign it,” says Najmi.

Designers and celebrities around the world are giving the French beret an overdue revival. Brims with shallow crowns are also in vogue this year.

Stand out of the crowd

However, if you want to stand out of the crowd you may want to go for soemthing different - perhaps a preacher or halo crown.

They are among a wide range of hat styles being showcased by award-winning Nigerian milliner Mogul Asim-Ita Kingsley at BurJuman. Prices range from Dh700-Dh3,500.

“In keeping with the trend the collection is largely designed in shades of lavender, purple and lilac,” says Asim

“Most women want their headpiece to match their outfit. But that could be an expensive proposition. My advice is stick to basics,” says Asim.
