Dubai: Al Ain beat Al Dhafra 1-0 at home on Monday to go joint top of their Arabian Gulf Cup group. Caio Fernandes got the game’s only goal on 27 minutes after an assist from Sa’ad Khamis.
The result leaves the Boss level on nine points with Al Nasr at the top of Group B after four rounds of matches. Al Ain are now just one win away from guaranteeing their qualification to the quarter-finals.
With this defeat, Al Dhafra were leapfrogged for third position by Al Jazira who also beat Sharjah 1-0 away on Monday. Nacer Barazite got the goal in that game on 44 minutes after being set-up by Abdullah Ramadan.
Al Wahda earlier confirmed their berth in the quarters on Sunday with a 2-0 win at home to Dibba to stay top of Group A on 12 points with four wins from four. Bani Yas went second on seven points with a 2-1 win away to Kalba, while Shabab Ahli went third on six points with a 2-1 win at home to Ajman in coach Rodolfo Arruabarrena’s first game in charge.
