Dubai: UAE’s Subha Srinivasan bowled a tight spell under tremendous pressure in a Super Over contest and helped her team win the seventh-place play-off match of the ICC Women’s World T20 Qualifier against hosts Netherlands.

After both the teams scored 146 runs to end in a tie, the winner was decided through Super Over.

Subha, who was the pick among all the UAE bowlers, defended a total of seven runs posted by Netherlands and helped UAE win by one run.

During the over, she ran out Sterre Kallis off a throw from UAE captain Humaira Tasneem from long on. Off the last ball of the over, though Netherlands’ Heather Siegers came down the track to hit her through the covers, Esha Oza pulled off a brilliant catch.

Speaking to Gulf News, Subha, who had bowled brilliantly through the tournament, explained the exciting moment of the match and said: “Being the consistent bowler our team coach Murali Sockalingam and captain Humaira picked me to bowl the Super Over. I took up the challenge as I had already been in such a situation before when I played in an Emirates Cricket Board league match against boys. I bowled according to the field and waited for them to make a mistake. Bowling such an over requires a lot of courage and I had the confidence since I had picked eight wickets from five matches. I am so happy and thrilled our team won this match.”

For UAE it was a learning experience including playing on wickets different from UAE. “More than me pulling off a thriller, we wanted to end the tournament with a victory. We return with valuable experience though we weren’t consistent enough,” added Subha.

UAE won the toss and elected to field. Netherlands’s consistent opener Kallis cracked 79 runs and also gave a good start of 52 runs with Siegers (18). After Nisha Ali dismissed Siegers, Denise Hannema hit an unbeaten 30 runs and steered Netherlands to a challenging total of 146 for 3.

UAE began the chase through consistent Esha, who hit 13 runs before being run out. Chaya Mughal (32) and Nisha Ali, who top scored with 37 runs, put on 70 runs. Soon wickets began to fell and wicketkeeper Judit Cleetus, taking a run off the last ball, equalled the score.
