Goodwood: Unbeaten Without Parole heads a quality field of eight runners for the Group 1 £1 million Sussex Stakes, one of Europe’s leading all-aged mile races, which is the showpiece race on day two at Glorious Goodwood on Wednesday.

Unlike in the past, there is no contender with a Dubai connection in a contest that has been won by some of flat racing’s greats, including Brigadier Gerard (1971), Giant’s Causeway (2000), Rock of Gibraltar (2001) and Frankel (2011-2012).

Godolphin have won the Sussex Stakes, which was first staged back in 1841, with Ramonti (2007), Noverre (20010 and Aljabr (1999).

Without Parole is hoping to establish himself as one of the top milers in Europe by posting a fifth successive victory under Italian Andrea Atzeni. On his most recent stat at Royal Ascot last month, he won the Group 1 St James’s Palace Stakes.

His main rivals include Expert Eye, who was supplemented to the race at a cost of £70,000 (Dh337,353) on July 26. Trained by Sir Michael Stoute, Expert Eye was one of the most impressive winners of 2017 Goodwood Festival when landing the Vintage Stakes by four and a half lengths. He looked even more stunning when taking out the 2018 Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Andrew Balding saddles Beat The Bank while David O’Meara relies on Lord Glitters.

O’Meara said: “Lord Glitters has come out of Ascot fine and we are happy with him.

“The three-year-olds in the Qatar Sussex Stakes look very good, particularly Without Parole, Gustav Klimt and Expert Eye.

“Any rain that comes will help the chances of Lord Glitters, but to be honest if there is firm in the going description, we will have to think about whether we run or not.”

The field also features Group 2 Norfolk Stakes fourth Rumble Inthejungle and Vintage Brut.
