Dubai: Mohammad Salah’s signing of a new long-term contract at Liverpool can finally take the club back to greatness as coach Jurgen Klopp has laid down a marker of intent for the coming seasons.

Top-four finishes are not going to be acceptable any more as the Anfield side and their fans still yearn for trophies.

A League Cup in 2012 and an FA Cup in 2006 is a paltry return for a club of Liverpool’s size in recent times — a 2005 Champions League title is the clear high point. Add on their zero Premier League titles and the trophy cabinet looks fairly bare these days.

But after narrowly missing out on Europe’s biggest prize in football when they went down to Real Madrid in Kiev in May, Liverpool have the makings of English and Euro champions once again after tying down the Egyptian star Salah to a five-year deal.

It also shows Salah’s trust in Klopp’s master plan. And that faith is key in unity at the club and also help lure more big names to Anfield where they will relish playing with someone of the playmaker’s potential.

“The new contract demonstrates two things very clearly — his belief in Liverpool and our belief in him,” Klopp said.

“When someone like Mo Salah commits and says this place is my home now, it speaks very loudly I think.

“Equally, our commitment to him says we see his value and want him to grow even more and get even better within our environment.”

Well played, Liverpool. Well played indeed.
