Dubai: Shaikh Mohammad Bin Maktoum Bin Rashid Al Maktoum has hailed the social role played by the Late Shaikh Maktoum Bin Rashid Ramadan Football Tournament organised by Dubai Police each year.

Shaikh Mohammad called on the organising committee headed by Major General Mohammad Saeed Al Merri at the Dubai Police Officers Club on Sunday and lauded them for putting up an impressive competition that benefits society during the month of Ramadan.

The organising committee is currently putting the final touches to conduct the eighth edition of this annual tournament that bears the name of the late Ruler of Dubai. The competition will get under way in the first week of Ramadan and continue over a 20-day period at the Dubai Police Officers Club.

In his meeting with the organising committee, Shaikh Mohammad praised the attention to detail from the tournament in putting up a show for the benefit of society. “I have noticed the consistency in progress made by this tournament since its inception in 2011.”

“Such an event has great values that are passed on to society using football as a tool. It is better that the youths get involved in a sports event during Ramadan rather than waste time doing little,” he added.

Last year, Bin Mezzaina, represented by Dubai Police, won the title with a 2-1 win over Bin Darwish, while Joma was placed third.

Entries are still being accepted till the end of this week, and according to organisers, a total of 19 teams have confirmed their willingness to participate this year. The final list of 16 teams will be made known after a meeting of the screening committee that includes Tariq Abdullah Al Rumaithi, Salah Al Muhairi, Nader Rashid, Wakil Zaki and Da’at Allah.
