Abu Dhabi: Roping in someone of Diego Maradona’s stature wouldn’t have been a cheap proposition for Belarusian club Dynamo Brest.

It is certain that the as yet undisclosed figure would have left a huge hole in their pockets but the club are sure the legend can take them to new heights.

“We are confident a man of Diego’s calibre, with his experience and expertise, can take us forward. We have had meaningful discussions with Diego and we are extremely happy to move on with his ideas and plans,” said Valdas Ivanauskas, vice-chairman of Dynamo Brest.

“We are looking at gaining from the vast experience he has. Everyone had the same opinion about getting Diego on board,” added Ivanauskas, who revealed that the deal came through by chance as they were planning to organise some friendly matches with Fujairah during the summer break.

“We wanted to play Fujairah to give some experience for our boys but then we learnt later that he was leaving. So we worked this out and it will be huge for entire Belarus and will put it on the map. This is good deal and I will say we are very very lucky,” he said.

Ivanauskas also backed Maradona’s idea for having three Emirati players at Dynamo Brest.

“Yes, we will welcome his move to get Emirati players if he feels there is a need,” he said. “We have some time before the Europa League and he knows exactly what we need. If Diego say this player can help us, then we will find a way to get him on board.”
