An unimaginable start for the hosts, last-gasp winners for Iran and Uruguay, and then the Ronaldo show.

We certainly have been given a whirlwind - some would say dream - start to a World Cup tournament that was shrouded in apprehension and controversy before a ball was kicked.

There was the gloom of corruption, the threat of hooliganism and ticket touts, accusations of misappropriated votes for the 2026 bidding process and a certain Julen Lopetegui getting the boot as coach of Spain.

But now the attention has well and truly turned to the men on the pitch, and they have certainly not disappointed in terms of action and talking points.

First there was the stunning start by Russia - their beleaguered coach Stanislav Cherchesov looked like he could not buy a win and everyone was tipping them to make a sharp exit from their own tournament. Five goals and a whipping of Saudi Arabia later and the picture looks very different.

Jose Gimenez and Aziz Bu Haddouz then contributed their own moments of excitement to break the hearts of Egypt and Morocco, respectively, and add to the drama - and avoid those dreaded 0-0 draws that give ammunition to the haters of the game.

But, despite all the early victories, it was the 3-3 draw between Spain and Portugal the will have them talking in the years and decades to come.

An early penalty, lead changing hands, a goal of the tournament contender and one of the star men, Cristiano Ronaldo, coming up trumps to complete his hat-trick and salvage a point for Portugal.

After a thrilling Uefa Champions League campaign, it was feared this tournament would fall flat and pale in comparison. So far so no-chance-of-that.

Sit back and enjoy the rest of this ride as the World Cup has now kicked off proper.
