Dubai: Former Al Wasl coach Diego Maradona is in talks to join an unnamed Chinese Super League team, following positive discussions between his agents and Chinese representatives in Dubai.

The 51-year-old Argentine has been out of work since July 10, when he was sacked by Al Wasl and replaced by Bruno Metsu, having failed to guide them to any silverware last season.

Agents Daniel Dos Reis and Diego Cativa met a representative of the Chinese club with Maradona in Dubai this week.

Dos Reis said: “We met in his house and [Diego] looked excited about the opportunity. Now the economic side is being discussed.”

Players Didier Drogba and Nicolas Anelka and manager Marcello Lippi have already made high-profile summer switches to Chinese clubs this summer and Maradona’s arrival would provide a significant further boost to the league.

Maradona visited Beijing in 2010 and Shanghai in 2012 on sponsorship and charity-linked appearances, while he also sued an online games company there in 2011 for using his name for promotional means without permission.
