Islamabad: Former leg-spinner Abdul Qadir believes dropping Fawad Alam, Ahmad Shehzad and Umar Akmal for the England tour had no justification, saying if performance in domestic cricket is no criteria then why to have such tournaments.
Qadir said if coach and selectors had to pick players for Tests from performance in Pakistan Super League (PSL), then there is no use of holding Quaid-e-Azam Trophy.
“Best performing players in Quaid-e-Azam Trophy must be picked for Tests same as PSL performing players should be picked for Twenty20s,” he said.
He said there is no say of selection committee in selecting the national team.
“Chief selector Inzamam-ul-Haq himself had confessed that his nephew Imam-ul-Haq was picked by head coach Mickey Arthur. If the coaching staff had to pick the players then there is no need of the selection committee,” he said.
Speaking about Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Najam Sethi’s visit to India to attend the International Cricket Council (ICC) meeting, he said Sethi must push for resumption of Pak-India bilateral series during his visit.
“The issue of the bilateral series must be resolved now. Sethi must meet Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) official and discuss the resumption of bilateral cricketing ties,” he said.
Qadir said: “We can go to India or any neutral venue to play the bilateral series. The people of both the nations are crazy for cricket as Pak-India series is greater than the Ashes and the Indian government must not mix politics with sports,” he said.
