Abu Dhabi: Traffic accidents decreased by 11 per cent in the first four months of 2018 compared to the first four months of 2017, the Abu Dhabi Police said in a statement issued on Saturday.
During the same period, deaths in road accidents decreased by 22 per cent, severe injuries by 14 per cent and fatalities from run-over accidents by 50 per cent.
The statement added that the number of vehicles however increased by 11 per cent, and the number of licensed drivers by six per cent.
Major General Ali Khalfan Al Dhaheri, director of central operations at Abu Dhabi Police, said that introduction of a number of smart systems had helped enhance safety on Abu Dhabi roads. He said more surveillance cameras and 14 smart towers have been installed on external roads. He said the smart policeman recorded 91,700 traffic violations in the first four months of this year.
Al Dhaheri said that the Police have also installed smart cameras at the entrance and exit of Qasr Al Bahr Tunnel, that ensures a smoother flow of traffic from and to Reem Island.
Despite warnings issued to motorists to drive carefully, and implementation of mobile radars, 115,000 traffic violations were recorded by radars.
Al Dhaheri urged motorists to focus on the road while driving, avoid sudden swerving or speeding and maintain safe distances from other vehicles.
The official said that parents have an important role to play in telling their children to drive carefully, because young motorists between the age of 18 and 30 years are found to responsible for 46 per cent of road accidents.
