Abu Dhabi: Residents have suggested to Abu Dhabi Police that radars be installed on roads to catch motorists who use mobile phones while driving and do not maintain sufficient distance from vehicles in front.

Residents cited these two violations as the major cause of accidents in Abu Dhabi.

They also suggested the police fix speed limits for each lane to further reduce accidents.

Recently, the Abu Dhabi Police launched an online campaign called ‘You Comment’, asking residents to share their suggestions and solutions with the police to make roads safer.

Police publicised common traffic law violations on its social media sites and invited the public to post their suggestions and solutions to help reduce the bad behaviour of some drivers which leads to accidents, injuries and loss of lives and property, the police said.

The police statistics for 2017 show that 199 people died and 149 others suffered serious injuries in road accidents in the emirate, while 289 people lost their lives and 156 others were injured seriously in 2016.

The major causes of road accidents and fatalities were sudden manoeuvring, jumping the red signal, tailgating and not maintaining lane discipline.

Colonel Mohammad Ali Al Muhairi, director of the Security Media Department, said, “Most of the respondents to the online campaign agreed that one of the main reasons for traffic accidents is talking on the phone while driving and tailgating.”

The initiative aims to to improve public awareness about road safety with the participation of residents, he said, adding that the police’s social media sites witnessed a wide-ranging interaction among its followers during the past two days.

The drive called ‘You Comment’ is an initiative launched by the Department of Security Media in the leadership sector through its social networking sites.
