Dubai: Residents of Dubai’s Al Khail Gate community have one month before they will have to start paying for parking vehicles in the community, Gulf News has learnt.
The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) will activate the paid parking meters in the residential community in Al Quoz on June 17, according to the RTA call centre.
The meters were installed across the community in the past month after the RTA took over the management and operation of parking lots from the community’s management on April 4.
Following the paid parking partnership agreement between the two entities, RTA had announced paid parking tariff of Dh4 per hour and a maximum daily fee of Dh32 throughout the year.
It has also put up boards notifying a fine of Dh200 for illegal parking in paid parking slots reserved for residents with seasonal permit cards (S 365).
As per the terms and conditions, RTA will issue one permit for apartments with less than three bedrooms and two permits for apartments with three bedrooms.
Tenants with permits can park either in the reserved parking (S 365) or the paid parking slots for visitors (365 L).
According to the call centre, a total of 8,867 parking permits will be issued to tenants.
Developed by Dubai Properties, the community has over 9,000 apartments spread across Phase 1 and Phase 2.
No figure was available for the total number of parking spaces available in the entire community. However, the call centre said a total of 3,317 paid parking slots are allotted for visitors (365 L).
Tenants with Ejari contracts had sought free parking for at least one car per apartment. Residents in the community had for some time expressed frustration at the lack of parking spaces and fines for parking violations and many had also sought two parking permits per family having two or more cars.
However, the call centre has confirmed that there is no amendment in the policy of RTA as of now. It added that tenants can start applying for permits at the RTA customer happiness centres in Dubai Municipality’s Al Manara Centre and Al Kifaf Centre as the department started issuing the permits on Tuesday.
These centres will be working from 9 am till 5pm from Sunday to Thursday during Ramadan. Paid parking will be activated after the Eid holidays.
Some residents said they were hopeful that RTA would still consider their requests submitted through the property management team.
“During the holy month of Ramadan in the Year of Zayed, we hope the RTA will consider the burden on the middle-income group of tenants this is going to put and make some amendments to the paid parking rules to ease the situation for us,” said A.R. Kurup, who lives in Phase 2 of the community.
Gulf News did not immediately receive a response to questions sent to RTA, which the property management said, should be addressing all matters related to parking in the community henceforth.
