Abu Dhabi: Windows and openings in residential buildings in Abu Dhabi must be secured so that they do not open wider than 10 centimetres, the Department of Municipal Affairs (DMA) announced in a statement sent on Monday.

The decree by the DMA aims to prevent falls from high-rise buildings, and also stipulates that windows or balcony openings less than 1.5 metres in height from the floor must have locks and proper protective measures installed.

The decree was issued in cooperation with the Abu Dhabi Civil Defence and the Ministry of Interior's Child Protection Centre.

Building owners have been granted six months to install protective devices. After this period, municipal and civil defence authorities will begin to conduct checks in residential areas to ensure compliance to the law, the DMA statement added.
