Abu Dhabi: The Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council (QCC), the entity responsible for developing quality infrastructure in the emirate, has recalled eight products from the market following the findings of an inspection campaign during the first half of this year.

As many as 902 units of the eight products were found not compliant with the quality and safety requirements, said a press release issued by the QCC on Tuesday on the inspection results of controlled products, measurement scales and pre-packaged products in the emirate, from January 1 to June 30.

The council inspected 35,547 samples of various controlled products, including toys, electrical appliances, tyres, tobacco products and household cleaning products, from which a total of 95 different samples were selected and sent to internationally accredited laboratories for examination and to ensure compliance with quality and safety standards. The results found that 48 per cent of the samples conformed to the requirements of quality and safety, whereas 44 per cent were non-compliant. Based on that, the QCC took corrective actions on 18 products totalling 16,121 units, including eight products that were recalled.

The QCC verified the accuracy of 2,277 measurement scales and quantities of 3,560 pre-packaged units of 76 food products from factories, suppliers and markets in the same period.

The measurement scales verified included retail scales, jewellery and precious metal scales, oud and Arabian perfume scales, weighing platforms, trade scales used in shipping activities by companies, and fuel-pump metres at Adnoc Distribution service stations.

The measurement scales that did not comply with requirements were withdrawn until maintenance and re-verification took place in order to ensure compliance with all mandatory requirements.

Sultan Al Muhairi, director of Information Services & Engagement at QCC, said the council encourages companies and employees in the industrial and commercial sectors to apply for the ‘AD Trustmark’, which increases the confidence of customers in their products.

“Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council has specialised technical teams and inspectors with the rights of judicial seizure who carry out daily verification of measurement scales and pre-packaged products,” he said.

Consumers advised to report non-complaint scales

Scales with red seal are non-compliant, quality council says

Abu Dhabi: Scales used in shops in Abu Dhabi emirate which have passed the verification process successfully will have gold verification mark, “Verified”, said the Quality and Conformity Council.

If the instrument has a red seal, it indicates non-compliance, said a QCC press release.

In addition, requirements stipulate that a three-pin plug should be fitted with all electrical appliances such as air-conditioners, refrigerators, washing machines and dryers. The stars on the label indicates energy efficiency of the product. The more stars the appliance has, the more energy-efficient it is considered to be.

The council urges consumers to look for the gold verification seals on scales before making any purchases and to report violations to the Abu Dhabi Government Contact Centre on 800555.
