Students from different parts of the UAE were awarded on Sunday by Bee’ah for their innovation and commitment in the cause of protecting the environment.
Bee’ah, Sharjah’s environmental management company, rewarded the outstanding creativity and innovation of students and teachers at the Environmental Excellence School Award (EESA) ceremony on Sunday.
Winners of the fifth Inter School Recycling Competition (ISRC) were also recognised at the ceremony.
The event, which took place at Al Jawaher Reception and Convention Centre in Sharjah, hosted nominees from Kindergarten to Grade 12, from the emirates of Sharjah, Fujairah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah, and Dubai.
EESA and ISRC are competitions were launched by Bee’ah School of Environment to incentivise and encourage positive environmental action among students.
This year’s edition had the unique distinction of being the first awards ceremony following the expansion of the programme.
Dr Shaikh Abdul Aziz Bin Ali Bin Rashid Al Nuaimi ‘The Green Shaikh’ graced the occasion and encouraged the students’ efforts in environmental advocacy.
Khaled Al Huraimel, Group CEO of Bee’ah, said, “We have always been deeply committed to increasing environmental awareness in the UAE. It is impossible to secure our ambitions for a green future without the participation of our future generations. It gives us great joy to witness the incredible growth of the Bee’ah School of Environment, and increase in participation in our competitions, the EESA and the ISRC.”
A total of fourteen awards were presented under the categories of Best Environmental Science Experiment, Best Environmental Film, Best Environmental Prototype, Best Environmental Invention, and Outstanding Individual Achievement. Winners were chosen by a judging panel made up of environmental experts and Bee’ah representatives, and walked away with cash prizes ranging from Dh5,000 to Dh25,000.
The Outstanding Individual Achievement (Students) awards were presented to Sharjah Indian School’s Joyal Joseph.
The ISRC, which is currently Sharjah-based, saw schools competing to collect the largest amount of recyclables.
Delhi Private School, in the ‘Large Schools’ category, won first prize by collecting an impressive 39.31 tonnes of recyclable material. In the ‘Medium Schools’ category, Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services collected 7.17 tonnes to secure the first position, while Al Sahwa School collected 11.44 tonnes to come first in the ‘Small Schools’ category.
