Dubai: Dubai Police have urged motorists to be cautious while driving in fog after one person was killed and five others were injured and 26 serious traffic accidents occurred due to foggy weather in the emirate last year.

Brigadier Saif Muhair Al Mazroui, director of the Traffic Department, said fog causes horrible traffic accidents especially on highways because of low visibility.

“If you combine fog and drivers’ negligence, then horrific traffic accidents will happen. Last year, we recorded 26 accidents because of foggy conditions, in which one person was killed and five others suffered injuries,” Brigadier Al Mazroui said.

He urged motorists to be cautious when driving in fog, and desist from exceeding speed limits.

“Motorists should always keep a safe distance between cars and adjust their speed to the weather conditions … allow extra time for your journey and check your planned route. It’s also advisable to not exceed speed limits,” Brigadier Al Mazroui added.

“People must check the weather condition before jumping behind the wheel and they should follow safety instructions and regulations to avoid accidents.”

He advised motorists to leave earlier to reach their offices to avoid accidents.

Dubai Police’s warning came a day after 22 people were injured in a 44-vehicle pileup on the Dubai-Abu Dhabi highway in the morning on Tuesday. There were two minor pileups in Al Ain too.

The accidents were reported between 8.30am and 10am on Tuesday, and brought traffic to a standstill on the affected roads.
