UAE students shine in CBSE Class 12 results

There is no official toppers’ list from the New Delhi-based CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education) for the Gulf region, which includes the UAE, where over 2,700 students appeared in the school-leaving exams between March and April.

In India, almost 2.8 million pupils took the exams this year, with the 83.01 per cent passing — up by almost one per cent on the 2017 school year. Meghana Srivastava from the state of Uttar Pradesh got the highest marks, scoring 499 out of 500.

On Saturday, many Indian schools in the UAE revealed their overall and individual student performance results.

Kishore, 17, who currently is in her home state of Kerala, said she was “blessed” to have the full support of her father Ouseph, mother Lynn, and class teacher Moeen Khanum, who taught her biology.

“In studies, you’ve got to focus on getting the concept right, then everything falls into place. You must focus in class, and if you have doubts, you should get them cleared by the teacher,” she said.

Kishore’s marks were the highest in the GEMS Education group of schools, in which over 21 per cent of 1,560 students scored above 90 per cent on average.

Michael Guzder, vice-president of education at GEMS Education, said: “GEMS schools have done exceedingly well in the examination this year. All thanks to the terrifically consistent work by the teachers who motivated and inspired their pupils to give their best. Finishing portions well on time, plenty of revision, solving of board question papers and a good rapport between teachers and pupils all contributed to the brilliant results. School principals raised the bar and the parent community supported admirably well as always.”

In the Commerce stream, Raina Shah earned 97.4 per cent, which her school, Indian High School (IHS) in Dubai, believes is the highest Commerce result for the UAE.

Shah, 17, who is from India’s Gujarat state, said she cannot thank her teachers and parents enough for their support. It was also her strategy that paid off.

“I spent a lot of time analysing how papers are corrected and what impressed the examiners — they don’t know you, they judge you based on the paper. Also, you have to set high goals for yourself, and you need to start studying from the beginning,” Shah explained.

She said she will “probably” go to Mumbai, India, to study business management

At IHS, Chaarulatha Kumar scored 96.4 per cent in the Humanities stream, also said to be the highest in the UAE for Humanities. The school had a 100 per cent pass rate for the 559 pupils who sat the exams — the highest number of candidates presented by a single school in Dubai. Also, 99.8 per cent of IHS students were placed in the First Division.

When her mobile phone broke earlier this year, she didn’t buy a new one so she could concentrate exclusively on her studies.

At this point, Siddiqui, 18, said, she plans to study political science and international relations in Germany. She already has acceptance from a university in Hong Kong.

At DPS Dubai, where the school average was 86.2 per cent, all students achieved First Division. A perfect score of 100 per cent was secured by students in Mathematics, Sociology, Engineering Graphics, Marketing and Psychology.

At DPS Sharjah, 91 per cent of students achieved distinction and 30 per cent scored over 90 per cent marks. The overall school average was 83.6 per cent. Neha Swaminathan from the Science stream topped the school with 97.8 per cent. Its toppers have already received admissions in various Ivy League colleges and universities. School principal Vandana Marwaha expressed her happiness saying the results reflect the sincerity and hard work put in by the students and teachers alike.
