Dubai: A man who celebrated his birthday on the New Year’s Eve with his friends reportedly committed suicide by hanging himself just two hours after ringing in 2018, Dubai Police said on Tuesday.
The man ended his life on his birthday — January 1.
Brigadier Abdullah Khadim Surour, director of Bur Dubai police station, said the police got an alert about the incident in Bur Dubai around 2am on Monday while the city was still busy celebrating new year.
“It was a strange incident as he died on his birthday. He was born on January 1, 1990 and was 28-year-old when he committed suicide. He hanged himself with a rope inside the apartment which he shared with his friends and colleagues,” Brig Surour said.
Police patrols went to the apartment and a team of experts collected evidence and questioned his colleagues.
“His friends said that they celebrated his birthday and watched the New Year celebrations. Later, he went to his room and locked the door. They went to check on him after some time and found his body,” he added.
Police said there is no foul play behind the death. His friends told officers that he had been facing an unstable situation and had been depressed recently.
“There is no suspicion of a crime behind his death and we informed his embassy to hand over his body to his family,” Brigadier Surour said.
