Dubai: Two brothers have been arrested for smuggling 1.3kg of heroin in their stomachs, Dubai Police said on Saturday.

Brigadier Eid Mohammad Thani Hareb, director of the Anti-Narcotic Department, said the two Asians were arrested at Dubai International Airport last month.

Police were tipped off that the pair swallowed 108 pills containing heroin and were travelling to the UAE on visit visas.

“We arrested them on arrival at the airport and they confessed to swallowing large amounts of heroin pills. They said that it wasn’t their first smuggling operation using [the same tactic],” Brig Hareb said.

The brothers were taken to Rashid Hospital to extract the pills.

The first suspect possessed 61 pills, weighing 790 grams, while the second suspect possessed 47 pills, weighing 538 grams.

They were referred to Dubai Public Prosecution to complete the investigation after being charged with possessing and trafficking in heroin.

Brig Hareb praised the role of his officers, saying police stand firm against drug smugglers and traffickers in the country.
