Dubai A woman has been accused of orally threatening to destroy the roastery of her former husband if he did not return her passport, a court heard on Thursday.
The 43-year-old Syrian roastery owner was said to have been called by his 28-year-old countrywoman ex-wife when he was in his shop in March.
Once the former husband responded, the ex-wife told him over the phone, according to records, that she would destroy his shop if he did not hand back her passport.
The Syrian man complained to the police about the incident, after which the 28-year-old woman was summoned for questioning.
Prosecutors accused the Syrian woman of verbally threatening to wreck her divorcee’s shop.
The suspect pleaded not guilty and refuted her accusation when she appeared before the Dubai Court of First Instance on Thursday.
“Not at all,” she told presiding judge Habib Awad.
The 43-year-old former husband claimed to prosecutors that the incident occurred while his countryman friend was present with him at his shop.
“I put my ex-wife on speaker and she said she would destroy my shop if I did not give her back her passport,” he testified to prosecutors.
The Syrian friend claimed to prosecutors that he overheard the suspect threatening to wreck the roastery if the former husband did not give the passport back.
The 28-year-old woman presented to presiding judge Awad a written defence in which she asked to be acquitted.
A ruling will be heard on October 8.
