Dubai: A student has been jailed for three months for assaulting a policeman, who was chasing his car before he got involved in a traffic accident that made him stop his vehicle.

Traffic Police officers were alerted about a reckless motorist, who had been driving dangerously on Sharjah roads.

They started chasing him in an attempt to stop him once he reached Dubai in September 2017.

During the chase, the 23-year-old student from Comoros Islands got involved in a car accident that forced him to stop his vehicle.

When the policemen tried to arrest the student he ran away from the scene. One of the policemen chased the defendant and tried to prevent him from climbing villa’s wall on which he assaulted the policeman.

On Sunday, the Dubai Court of First Instance convicted the student of beating and pushing the policeman during arrest.

Presiding judge Fahd Al Shamsi said the defendant, who pleaded not guilty, will be deported after serving his punishment.

Defending himself in court, the student said he got involved in an accident while not wearing the seat belt. He denied assaulting the policeman and contended that he was taken to hospital after the accident.

The accused refuted the allegation of climbing a villa’s wall, contending in court that the incident happened on a highway.

The policeman said: “We were alerted that the defendant had been driving his car recklessly and endangering the lives of other road users. Once we located his car on Dubai streets, we chased his car to stop him. He rammed his car into another that made him stop … he jumped out of his vehicle and ran away. I chased him and tried to stop him from climbing a villa’s wall … while doing so, he pushed me and assaulted me. My colleagues and I restrained him and took him into custody.”

Sunday’s ruling remains subject to appeal within 15 days.
