Dubai: A stewardess has been jailed for three months for misusing Instagram and threatening to defame a man by posting his wife’s nude photos with her boyfriend if he did not pay her Dh367,000.

The 29-year-old Latvian stewardess sent a message to the Azerbaijani man’s account on Instagram and in which she mentioned that she wanted him to pay her money, otherwise she would post indecent photos of his wife with her boyfriend.

On Tuesday, the Dubai Court of First Instance convicted the Latvian defendant of misusing a social media platform to blackmail the Azerbaijani man and attempting to extort Dh367,000 from him in December.

Presiding judge Mohammad Jamal said the accused, who had pleaded not guilty, will be deported following the completion of her punishment.

The victim testified that he received a message on Instagram and in which he was told that his wife had a boyfriend and that she demanded to meet him to inform him about his wife’s affair.

When he replied to the message, the victim claimed that the sender [the defendant] told him that she had obtained photos on her iPad showing her ex-boyfriend [the wife’s alleged current boyfriend] nude with his wife.

The accused asked the Azerbaijani man to pay Dh367,000 [$100,000] if he did not want the photos to be uploaded online, testified the victim.

He also claimed that she threatened that if he did not pay her the demanded amount, she would send the photos to his family in Azerbaijan.

Records said the victim transferred to the defendant’s bank account Dh36,700 once she sent him a photo of his wife naked.

The Azeri claimed during questioning that the convicted stewardess had demanded Dh36,700 for each photo.

The Latvian was tracked down through her Instagram account and apprehended by Dubai Police’s cybercrime section shortly after the victim reported what had happened to him.

A policeman testified that during questioning, the defendant told him that she and her former boyfriend had plotted to blackmail and extort the victim.

The primary judgement remains subject to appeal within 15 days.
