Dubai A guard, who beat two policemen and cursed them when they asked him for his identification papers after a street fight, has been jailed for three months.

Following a group street fight in Al Nakheel area, a police patrol went there in April.

The two policemen asked the 22-year-old Kenyan guard for his identification papers but he refused to do so.

The suspect then turned violent and beat one of the policemen on his head and cursed him and when the latter’s colleague intervened to assist him, the defendant assaulted him as well.

The two policemen then restrained the Kenyan, handcuffed him and took him into custody.

On Monday, the Dubai Court of First Instance convicted the suspect of assaulting and insulting the two policemen who were carrying out their duties.

Presiding judge Urfan Omar said the accused, who pleaded not guilty, will be deported following the completion of his jail term.

One of the policemen told prosecutors that they went to the area where the street fight took place. “When I asked the accused for his identification papers, he responded angrily and said he will not do so. Then he beat me and cursed me. He also assaulted my partner who tried to assist me. We restrained him and took him to the police station,” he testified.

A Pakistani witness said he saw the defendant assaulting and cursing the policemen.

“I did not witness the policemen beating or assaulting the accused … one of the policemen fell down when the defendant assaulted him,” he said.

Monday’s ruling remains subject to appeal within 15 days.
