Cairo: His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces started a visit to Egypt on Tuesday for talks with Egyptian President Abdul Fattah Al Sissi.

Al Sissi welcomed Shaikh Mohammad at Cairo airport and escorted him for talks on boosting relations between the two countries and on the regional scene, state media reported.

Shaikh Mohammad’s two-day visit to Egypt comes less than a week before Arab leaders meet in Saudi Arabia for their annual summit.

In February, the Egyptian president visited the UAE where he met Shaikh Mohammad.

Egypt and the UAE maintain close ties. On Tuesday, both countries started a naval drill at a Red Sea base, semi-official newspaper Al Ahram reported.

Navy and air forces from the two countries are participating in the exercise codenamed “Khalifa 3”, according to the report. The drill is part of enhanced military links between the two countries. It includes training in protecting sea routes, combat, searching suspected vessels and facing potential maritime threats.

The UAE and Egypt are key Arab allies. Both countries are among an Arab quartet that last June cut off diplomatic and transportation links with Qatar over its support for terrorism.
