Dubai: The three children whose bodies were wrapped in garbage bags and dumped on a street in Cairo last week, were left by their mother, according to a statement by the interior ministry.
The Egyptian interior ministry published a statement on their social media accounts, stating that the suspects were arrested and the mother of the children is the main accused.
Investigations revealed that the 36-year-old mother of the three children, aged 5, 4 and 2, dumped their bodies after she returned home to find them killed by a fire that broke out in one of the rooms of the flat where she lives in.
"When she returned to the apartment at 6 am, she discovered a fire in one of the rooms and found that the three children were dead. She wrapped them up in carpets, put them in the bags and the and abandoned them where they were found," the ministry said
The burnt bodies were found on a street in Giza, south of Cairo last week.
The chilling mystery has made headlines in Egypt and prompted massive police hunt for the suspects.
The case was solved when a tuk-tuk driver came forward and admitted transferring two women and a small girl; carrying two black garbage bags and an old carpet to the spot were the bodies were found.
The driver said that he had no idea what the bags contained and directed the police to the neighbourhood where he had picked them up.
Police intensified their investigation in that area, until they located an apartment with a burned room inside it, by which they concluded was the room the children died in.
Police arrested the mother, her husband and her friend. They all live in that apartment.
During investigations, the friend confessed that on the night of the incident she left with the mother, Suha, to a nightclub they work in Haram street, leaving behind the children unattended in a closed room. Upon their return at 6am, they found that a fire had started in the room and killed the three children.
All the children have different fathers. The man who was arrested is not their father. He was recently married to the woman.
The two women didn’t want to be dragged into any legal situation and hence decided to get rid of the children’s bodies.
