Cairo: Egyptian prosecutors on Saturday ordered a Lebanese woman detained pending further questioning after she appeared in a video angrily insulting Egyptians over alleged street abuses and fraud.
Chief Prosecutor Nabil Sadeq ordered the woman, identified as Mona Mazbuh, be jailed for four days pending further investigations on charges of insulting the Egyptian people, the official Middle East News Agency reported.
The woman was arrested Thursday at Cairo airport before she could leave Egypt.
Her arrest was in response to several legal complaints that accused her of insulting Egyptians in the Facebook video that went viral online and triggered outrage in the country.
She was arrested upon an order from the chief prosecutor, according to MENA.
Before her arrest, the woman appeared in a second video in which she apologised, saying she did not mean to offend “respected Egyptians”.
She added that she loved the country and had visited it several times.
Some lawmakers were quoted in the local media as demanding authorities to ban the suspect from entering Egypt after she is tried and penalised for slander.
