Dubai: Turkey has reportedly asked for permission to search Saudi Arabia’s general consulate in Istanbul.

The request was made on Sunday as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned Saudi Ambassador Waleed Al Khereiji, Turkish daily Sabah reported on Monday, quoting diplomatic sources.

It was the second time that the ambassador was summoned by the ministry following Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi’s disappearance.

The ambassador was summoned to the ministry on Wednesday afternoon and was asked about the whereabouts of Khashoggi in a meeting with Deputy Foreign Minister Yavuz Selim Kıran.

Turkish prosecutors have launched an investigation into the fate of Khashoggi whose whereabouts have been a mystery since Tuesday when he walked into the consulate for personal documents.

Reports said that he was still inside the building while Saudi Arabia insists that he had left the premises.

Several journalists had been allowed inside the consulate to check whether the Saudi journalist was there.
