Dubai: A Saudi columnist said that she was puzzled by the mystery surrounding Hatice Cengiz, the Turkish woman who introduced herself as the fiancee of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi whose disappearance is being probed by a joint Saudi-Turkish team.
“As we are waiting for the results of the investigation in the disappearance of Jamal Khashoggi, my attention was drawn to the numerous interviews given on television by one of his colleagues at the Washington Post. However, the number one woman in the case, his fiancee Hatice Cengiz, did not appear on a single TV interview,” Mai Khalid wrote for Saudi daily Okaz.
“You can imagine the number of offers from Turkish and international TV stations that were presented to her to give an interview.”
What is more intriguing is her attitude towards President Donald Trump’s invitation to the White House, she added.
“In recent days, I saw reports about President Trump wanting to invite me to the White House,” Cengiz wrote in an oped. “If he makes a genuine contribution to the efforts to reveal what happened inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul that day, I will consider accepting his invitation.”
May said she was perplexed how a woman with such a dramatic cause would not speak to reporters and would not go to the White House.
“Who is this strange woman who is hiding behind her image and refusing to answer questions? How come she was not included in the investigation? I do not accuse Hatice Cengiz of anything, but what I do know is that her writing is devoid of the emotion she pretends she feels. Her writing style is political and aware of how people react and how public opinion is incited,” Mai said.
