Doha: A battery recycling factory with a facility to handle 4,000 metric tons of battery waste every year will be built in Mesaieed Industrial City, according to Qatar’s daily Al Rayyah.
The promoters explained that the company is being established in line with the directives of the recent Basel convention where the importance of disposing of hazardous wastes was one of the main highlights of the discussions.
The company Rassas Batery Recycling Factory, as the first in Qatar, is aiming to help keep Qatar free from hazard industrial waste and poisonous contaminants.
The initial work on the factory started in November 2010. The project will be built in two phases and the first phase of the facility is expected to be ready by January 2013.
The first phase of the factory includes acid neutralisation and battery recycling facilities. The second phase, plastic recycling and pelletising lines will be built.
The promoters appointed a team of experts to conduct intensive studies on the elimination of hazardous wastes. They said the production capacity of the factory is based on the current strength of the local market, which is about 4,000 metric tons a year of used batteries, by 2030 the figure could cross 10,000 metric tons due to the 5% annual growth.
The project will cost about 20 Million Qatari Ryals (Dh20.13 million)to built the two phases, warehouse, and recycling and production lines.
