Manama: A Bahraini teenager was killed in a tragic accident when their bus on Al Qasem-Madinah highway overturned.
The accident on Monday also resulted in the death of the driver, an Arab national, and in injuries to scores of Bahraini passengers on their way to performing Umrah.
Initial reports said a burst tyre caused the driver to lose control of the bus that overturned several times. The young Bahraini woman was killed on the spot, about 300 kilometres away from Madinah.
According to Saudi health authorities, 48 people were also injured in the accident. Those who needed medical treatment were transported to various hospitals in the region.
The Bahraini consulate in the Red Sea city of Jeddah confirmed the accident on its Twitter account, saying that it was coordinating with the competent authorities regarding the procedures in such cases.
Last week, six Bahrainis of the same family were killed in Al Sulail, near Wadi Al Dawaser and about 600 kilometres from the Saudi capital Riyadh.
One of the victims was a young student with outstanding academic achievements who was deeply mourned by her high school mates.
Bahrainis regularly use the 25-kilometre King Fahd Causeway to drive into Saudi Arabia and to Makkah, almost 1,200 kilometres away, to perform Umrah.
With the academic year over, several students opt to go on land trips organised by Umrah operators.
