State Minister for Interior Talal Chaudhry has questioned why if the constitution gave the right to seek review against a court verdict to millions of Pakistanis, Nawaz Sharif could not enjoy this right.

“Terrorists have right to appeal. Has this right been given to Nawaz Sharif or otherwise. If the constitution gives right to file review petition against court decision to million of Pakistanis then why Nawaz Sharif cannot exercise this right. Why this right has been snatched from Nawaz Sharif. We have filed the application in the court to meet the requirements of justice”, he said while talking to media Wednesday.

“Our questions are very clear. These are not only limited to Sharif family. Was any Prime Minister disqualified in the past this way?” he said.

He held that people and lawyers had rejected the disqualification of Nawaz Sharif. If any mistake has been committed then it should be corrected, he added.

Chaudhry said Sharif was only demanding his right. “It is not any intransigence. We respect the institutions.

“There should be legislation against the insult of voters,” he remarked.

Chaudhry said the legal and constitutional experts and the general public had rejected the disqualification of Sharif.

Talking to media outside the Supreme Court he said that the questions raised in the review petition by the Sharif family were very clear. He said that Nawaz Sharif had the right of fair trial like every Pakistani and he cannot be denied this right.

He said the people of Pakistan during Nawaz Sharif’s journey to Lahore on the Grand Trunk Road and in the corner meetings of NA-120 have rejected the court verdict against Sharif.

Chaudhry said the review petition has been filed to undo the mistakes in the disqualification verdict. “We are not seeking any favour, we only demand Nawaz Sharif’s right,” he said.

He questioned why if the deposed judges of the Supreme Court could be restored after a long march in 2009, the appeal of an elected Prime Minister couldn’t be entertained.
