Patna: A major government hospital in India’s Bihar state has come under fire again after a woman died of injuries sustained when the table she was being operated on collapsed.

A doctor who was carrying out the operation also broke his finger in the incident, reports said.

The incident took place in the orthopaedic ward of the Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) early this week but was only reported in the media on Thursday.

As per reports, Ansari Khatoon who was suffering from spinal problems was brought to the operation theatre on Monday for surgery and asked to change her body position when the traction table suddenly broke apart in the middle.

As a result of which the patient fell down on the ground and suffered serious injuries.

Reports said Dr B.N. Charturvedi, a junior resident doctor at the hospital who was conducting the operation, broke one of his fingers in his left hand and also suffered wounds in his leg, prompting him to instantly stop the operation.

Dr Charturvedi has reported the matter to his seniors and intimated them about the prevailing state of affairs in the hospital.

“The traction table has collapsed within a year of its purchase,” the doctor reportedly said in his written complaint with the hospital superintendent.

This is the third incident of gross negligence at local government hospitals in recent weeks.

A fortnight ago, the same hospital earned brickbats when a seriously-ill two-month-old baby fitted with oxygen cylinder was allegedly denied a stretcher as a result of which the family members had to carry him in arms. The baby collapsed eventually.

The baby died even before the authorities could submit a probe report to the government, which had ordered an investigation after the photograph of the baby being carried in the lap by his grandfather Rambabu Prasad went viral.

Before this, a middle-aged woman died at a government hospital in Saharsa district after she was operated upon by health staffs in torchlight.

The victim had been seriously injured in a road accident while was out on a morning walk with her husband.

Her husband also died in the road accident.
