Singer Melanie Brown, popularly known as Mel B, has been ordered to pay her estranged husband Stephen Belafonte spousal support during their divorce proceedings.

The former Spice Girls star was asked by a judge to give Belafonte $40,000 per month (Dh146,885) and help him with a one-time payment of $140,000 for his legal fees.

Mel B is divorcing Belafonte after a decade-long marriage. She revealed in April that her husband physically and emotionally abused her during their marriage.

According to Mel B’s claims, Belafonte hit her, attacked her self confidence, cheated on her with their nanny, forced her to have threesomes, secretly recorded the intercourse, used the sex tapes against her, and isolated her from her family.

The singer says she attempted suicide in 2014 when she took an entire bottle of Aspirin, but couldn’t go through with it. When she tried to call for help, Belafonte reportedly locked her in a bedroom.

She has since been granted a restraining order against him. He was also ordered to stay away from her children. She has a daughter with Belafonte and has two other children from previous relationships.

Mel B’s mother Andrea Brown has slammed the court’s decision ordering her daughter to pay spousal support.

“Have to be thankful, my daughter alive after 10 years of worry. She’s finely safe. More important than money [sic],” Andrea tweeted on Saturday.

She also shared a news link of the court’s decision and wrote: “This would never happen in England disgusted with this news.”
