The Italians are big on family and sharing food and that’s exactly what Scalini’s Ramadan menu is about. Each iftar starts with dates, freshly baked bread and olives followed by a selection of Italian antipasti to share. The course features the burrata with cherry tomatoes, calamari and carpaccio with ruccola and truffle. Then came the soup, from which we could choose either a lentil soup or a Guazzeto di Pesce, a seafood soup, as well as a course of fresh salads and a plate of simple sauteed mushrooms that tasted fantastic.

As a seafood lover, I opted for the seafood soup and it was full of fish, calamari and perhaps a shrimp or two.

Then came the best course, the pasta. My favourite was the pappardelle with veal ragu and shaved truffle, then the aubergine melanzane with mozzarella and basil, and grilled fillets of Mediterranean seabass. The last needed a hint of lemon, but then was a light and a healthy protein to have for iftar.

Ending the evening on a sweet note, Scalini served an assortment of desserts, which included tiramisu, a fresh fruit salad and a cheesecake with berries, served with a side of karak tea.

Scalini is great for people who don’t have a huge appetite and want a light iftar that offers tasting size portions, but a great variety of dishes.
