When the reality TV show Keeping Up With the Kardashians (KUWTK) first hit the screens 10 years ago, no one could have fathomed the cultural revolution it would bring. The show introduced viewers to what would soon become the first family of reality TV — the Kardashian clan.
Calling them fashion icons, social media whizkids or simply marketing geniuses would not be amiss. Since 2007, people have loved them, hated them, but have certainly been unable to ignore the riveting antics of the Kardashians (and Jenners) — be it Kim, Khloe, Kourtney or matriarch Kris, or the Jenner brood with Kendall, Kylie and Caitlyn (formerly Bruce).
Looking back, there are more than enough iconic Kardashian moments. They’ve been through so many things — marriages, proposals, divorces, babies, arrests, family vacations, gender altering surgeries, oh, and the spin offs. So much to reminisce about.
Gulf News tabloid! turns back the clock to look at the 10 most iconic moments of KUWTK history:
“Kim, your sister is going to jail!”
Do you remember that iconic moment when Khloe was arrested for violating probation (she was arrested for driving under the influence in 2007) and all Kim could do was take selfies in the backseat of the car? It was one of those moments where viewers would see how self-absorbed Kim could really be. But it is also to be noted how she was taking selfies way before anyone else knew what they were.
“Aunty Kris, its Todd Kranes”
One of our favourite KUWTK moments was when Scott Disick (Kourtney’s ex) pranked Kris. “Hello Aunty Kris, it’s me. It’s Todd Kranes.” He called her over and over again until she mercilessly hung up on him. This prank went on for many seasons, until they finally confessed on a family trip that it was in fact Disick impersonating one of their old family friends, Todd Kranes.
“I lost my diamond earring!”
Kim got a lot of flak for freaking out about losing a $75,000 (Dh275,410) diamond earring. “Kim, there’s people in the world that are dying,” said Kourtney in a bored monotone voice. It all happened when Kim’s former husband Kris Humphries picked her up and threw her off a yacht on a family vacation in Bora Bora. Her earring went missing and she went hysterical. But think about it, wouldn’t you freak out if you lost anything that cost more than Dh1,000 at the bottom of the sea? You would probably do everything you can to dive down and get it. Don’t hate, OK?
“Kim sweetie, you’re doing amazing”
Kris, the ultimate stage mum, convinced her own daughter to pose nude for Playboy magazine when it was just season one of KUWTK. While the photoshoot took place, Kris was snapping her own pictures of her daughter, uttering five words that will be immortalised for years to come as one of the funniest internet memes out there.
“I think my favourite day this year was when Oprah came over”
During one of their family gatherings to re-watch their season’s best footage, Kris reflected back on the time when talk show queen Oprah came over. She claimed that it was her favourite moment of the year, when Scott chimed in: “Not when your granddaughter Penelope was born you heartless wench?” Time and time again, Kris fails to prove that she is a devoted grandmother. Her role as momager, however… killing it.
“Call me Caitlyn”
Bruce Jenner declared a new form on the July cover of Vanity Fair magazine in 2015 — Caitlyn. She posed with long hair in a strapless white corset, legs crossed and sitting on a stool. The image was shot by famed celebrity photographer Annie Leibovitz. Jenner also debuted a new Twitter account with: “I’m so happy after such a long struggle to be living my true self. Welcome to the world Caitlyn. Can’t wait for you to get to know her/me.”
“PLEASE MARRY ME!”
This was one of the few times we saw Kanye West without a frown. He was all smiles when he proposed to his then girlfriend and baby mama Kim at San Francisco’s AT&T Park. It was also Kim’s 33rd birthday, which made the day extra special. This isn’t the first proposal that we’ve seen on KUWTK, but it certainly is the most memorable one.
“You are just so jealous that you cannot get a Bentley”
Do we all remember Kim and Khloe’s first real fight onscreen? Well, Kim wanted to treat herself with a brand new car — specifically a white Bentley. After they all went down to pick up the car, one of the sales people there was rude to Kourtney and Khloe while they waited. They were not happy and felt disrespected. When Kim didn’t stand up for them, they accused her of only caring about money. Kim’s moment was ruined and later in the episode she attacked Khloe with her purse.
“Let the Lord be with you”
For those of you who didn’t know, Scott is actually a Lord. On a family trip to London, Scott undertakes a traditional English knighting ceremony, where he literally becomes a Lord. How did this happen you may ask? He purchased the title on the internet. “I don’t have to be walking around like some peasant. I’m royalty.” He then threw a party celebrated become British royalty.
“I start laughing at Kim when she’s crying”
Kim has one of the most epic cry faces on the internet. They are now famous internet memes and everyone in the family makes some less than supportive comments about it. “I just can’t help it, she has this ugly crying face,” her sister Kourtney famously said.
