What makes you proud to be Pinoy?

There are many things that make me proud as a Filipino. How our forefathers struggled to achieve independence makes me especially proud and grateful for the freedom we enjoy at present.

I am proud too of our rich cultural heritage and the beautiful and enchanting islands of my country.

Finally, I am proud of our people. Filipinos are the most resilient people in this world. Amidst natural disasters and political challenges, we remain resolute, hopeful and happy.

What is unique about the Philippines?

Each island in the Philippines is unique and offers different experience to any traveller. But I think most have regarded the Filipinos themselves as what makes their stay in our country enjoyable and distinct.

Filipinos are the most hospitable, cheerful people on this planet. We can easily adapt to new environments or settings. We emit a certain warmth to everyone we interact with. Recently, popular American chef Anthony Bourdain said Filipinos are the most giving and caring people he has ever known.

What is the Filipino cultural identity?

The combination of our indigenous traditions from our Malay ancestry, alongside customs and traditions acquired from those who have colonised us constitute our cultural identity. This diversity has made Filipino culture rich and unique at the same time.

What is your hometown like?

I was born and raised in Manila, but my parents are from Negros Occidental, a provincial, rural and bucolic place where everybody knew each other and where life was far simpler than today.

What’s your favourite Filipino food?

Chicken adobo, ampalaya (bitter gourd or bitter melon) and sinigang, a Filipino soup or stew characterised by its sour and savoury taste most often associated with tamarind.

Which stereotypes about Filipinos are true/not true?

While it is true that Filipinos love to sing, it is not true that everyone sings well. It is also true that Filipinos are very friendly people. We also love basketball and boxing.

What sights or experiences in your country are not to be missed?

There are so many. Palawan, which was selected by Condé Nast Traveler as the most beautiful island in the world, is one. Boracay is another top destination. Bohol, with its historical sites and the world-renowned chocolate hills, is another. In the North, the Banawa Rice Terraces must not be missed. These are just a few of the more than 7,100 islands which one can visit.
