From the society-defining television — developed thanks to Quebec’s Reginald Fessendon’s breakthrough with amplitude modulation (AM frequency) — to the first ever gas mask introduced by Cluny MacPherson in 1915, the more domestic garbage bag invented by Harry Wasylyk in 1950, right up to the BlackBerry, Canada’s resume of innovation is unarguably impressive.

It’s no surprise then that the UAE is keen to tuck into a slice of the innovative Canadian pie and The Canada UAE Innovation Partnership Week, running from September 23 to 26, is the perfect platform for the two countries to work together.

Under the patronage of Sultan Bin Saeed Al Mansouri, Minister of Economy, the Innovation Week will include numerous meetings, seminars, presentations and business-to-business (B2B) match-making between Canadian SME delegations and Emirati counterparts. The objectives include the introduction of new Canadian players to the UAE market, the identification of Emirati partnerships and institutional cooperation, the identification of training opportunities and sharing of best practices, and the provision of assistance to diversification efforts in many new technology sectors of priority interest to the UAE.

A year on from the signing of two significant Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) on institutional cooperation in innovation and SME support, the UAE Ministry of Economy made Canada the feature partner country at this year’s SME Innovation Conference.
