Dubai: A college student, who had premarital sex with her boyfriend before her father found him hiding under her cot, lost her legal battle and will be deported.

The 18-year-old Jordanian student and her 22-year-old Emirati boyfriend pleaded guilty when they appeared in the Dubai Appeal Court and admitted that they indulged in premarital sex and then asked for a pardon.

The Appeal Court handed the couple a three-month suspended jail term but ordered that the Jordanian girl be deported.

The student’s lawyer appealed the appellate judgement before Dubai’s highest court and defended that his client had indulged in sex out of wedlock [before the trial] with her boyfriend in a bid to convince and pressure their parents to give consent to their marriage.

“The two defendants had premarital sex and that was their way to draw their parents’ attention and force them to allow their marriage … and which has happened during the course of the trial. We have produced their marriage contract to the court and are seeking the court to cancel my client’s deportation. She is married to an Emirati now and we ask the court to treat them with leniency. They did not have a criminal intent,” the lawyer argued before the Cassation Court.

Records said the couple met at a café in Deira in 2016 and in December 2017 they fell asleep after they met in her bedroom one Friday afternoon.

At 3pm when the father knocked on the bedroom door as he came to visit his daughter, the girl woke up scared because her boyfriend was in the room.

Following a quick argument, the boy hid underneath the bed as his girlfriend went to answer the door.

The father’s suspicion grew stronger once he noticed that his daughter was perplexed and went on searching the premises.

The father had a heated argument and brawled with the 22-year-old once he saw the latter’s jeans on the hanger and discovered that he was hiding under the bed.

The Emirati could not to leave the flat and the girl’s father called the police.

When the student and the man were taken to the police station for further investigation, it was discovered that the couple had been involved in a sexual affair.

Prosecutors charged the defendant with having consensual sex, an accusation that they confessed before the primary and appellate courts.

The college student testified that she met the Emirati in a café and they exchanged their contact numbers.

“Love blossomed between us and he used to visit my flat. One evening, I invited him over to have dinner. We had sex after dinner and slept … my father came the next day and knocked on the door. I did not know what to do and didn’t answer the door. My father felt suspicious before he entered my bedroom to check if anybody was there. When he saw the jeans, I told him that it was that of a female friend. Unconvinced with my response, he searched the house until he was shocked to find my boyfriend hiding under the bed. My father stopped him from leaving and called the police,” she said.

When questioned, the Emirati admitted that they had been having consensual sex at the student’s flat in Dubai.

The Cassation Court rejected the student’s appeal and upheld her deportation order and suspended jail term.
