Dubai: Elon Musk’s Tesla Model X has just successfully pulled an airplane, setting a new world record for the heaviest aircraft pull by an electric production passenger vehicle.
Tesla has teamed up with Qantas to demonstrate the pulling power of the electric SUV and as part of a Guinness World Record attempt.
In a video that has gone viral since it was released on Tuesday, a Tesla Model X P100D is shown towing a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner weighing over 100 tonnes on a taxiway at Melbourne Airport.
The aircraft is the newest member of the Qantas fleet.

It’s said to be the first time a passenger aircraft has been hitched to an electric passenger vehicle for towing.
Tesla car’s road tow rated capacity is only 2.5 tonnes, yet it managed to pull the 130-tonne aircraft by nearly 300 metres.
The plane, however, was not carrying cargo or passenger at the time, although it had a small amount of fuel onboard.
It wasn’t the first time a car showed its prowess for pulling a gigantic vehicle. In 2006, A Volkswagen Touareg pulled a 155-tonne Boeing 747-200 plane.
