A new full-fledged labour court will come up soon in the capital where all cases pertaining to workers and contracting parties will be heard, a top official said on Tuesday.

The specialised court will hear all labour cases and will be named “Abu Dhabi Labour Court”. The new worker’s-only court will accommodate minor and major first instance courts as well as appeal and enforcement departments. However, the new court will be located at the headquarters of the former Abu Dhabi Labour Chambers in Mohammad Bin Zayed City.

All cases and appeals, currently being heard by the labour chambers in the existing Abu Dhabi Judicial Department’s courts shall be referred to the new court.

The date of opening of the new court will be announced later.

Shaikh Mansour Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister of the UAE and Minister of Presidential Affairs and Chairman of Abu Dhabi Judicial Department (ADJD), issued a decision establishing the specialised court.

As per the decision, the Abu Dhabi Labour Court shall be competent to hear all the cases filed by or against workers, including those involving service workers, in addition to the enforcement of judgements and judicial orders issued by various chambers of the court.

The Abu Dhabi Labour Court shall also hear all appeals raised against the judgements of the Court of First Instance as well as the rulings and decisions given by enforcement judges and preliminary and summary matters judgements, the decision said.

Commenting about the decision, Yousuf Saeed Al Abri, Undersecretary of the ADJD, said the decision was aimed at creating a legislative and judicial infrastructure to regulate the labour market to the benefit of both parties of the contractual relationship.

The decision falls under the strategic priority of the judicial department to enhance the effectiveness and sustainability of the judicial processes and ensure total access to services in order to achieve accomplished justice, he said.

Al Abri also announced that a subsequent decision shall be issued to appoint Counsellor Abdullah Fares Al Nuaimi as Chief Justice of the Abu Dhabi Labour Court.
