Dubai: India’s Union Minister Babul Supriyo is in the news again for threatening to break a man’s leg at an event he was attending to honour people with determination.

India’s news agency, ANI tweeted: “‘What happened to you? Any problem? I can break one of your legs’: Union Minister Babul Supriyo to a man during a program for people with determination at Nazrul Manch in Asansol #WestBengal”

The former singer was also in the news earlier this year when he threatened people at his constituency of Asansol in West Bengal, saying: “I will rip your skin off” after being confronted by people on violence in the city.

People on social media were furious at the MP’s behaviour and felt this would affect voters’ decision in the upcoming 2019 elections.

Facebook user Kanchan Mukherjee wrote: “Babul Supriyo has been showing signs of a man scared that his fate has been sealed already since it is more than clear that he will meet rout in the election 2019 and has no hope for himself in Bengal. An immature personality in addition to the other mental conditions common in his Party.”

Another Facebook user Ashish Gorde wrote: “In a developed country this would be reason enough for resignation or giving up politics in disgrace but in Modi/Shah’s BJP ...”

Arup Maity added: “I can remember another incident where he threatened to ‘skin’ someone.”

Other social media users were upset with police inaction when politicians openly threatened the public.

Tweep @Ch_Upendra wrote: “He should be booked for threatening by the police but it will never happen because he is a leader and above the law. Not only in this party [Bharatiya Janata Party] but in all parties because we as a voter are not mature enough.”

Even supporters of the ruling BJP spoke out against the minister’s behaviour.

Twitter user @kallgorr wrote: “… I am a BJP supporter and an RSS Swayamsevak but this type of toxic language is unacceptable. It doesn’t matter to me if he is from BJP or Congress, we must always have empathy and respect for others. Unfortunately, our politicians do not understand this.”
