Ramadan is the ninth month in the Islamic calendar and it is observed by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting to commemorate the revelation of the Quran to Prophet Mohammad [PBUH]. It is also a month where Muslims try to practise increased self-discipline and several other virtues to make us better people.

Let us utilise this Ramadan as a turning point in our life for a better tomorrow. In addition to the religious faith and customs, why can’t we use Ramadan as a turning point in our lives, as well as for the whole community? Let us stop smoking, because it’s bad for our health and for our families. Let us obey traffic rules strictly and avoid unnecessary speeding and honking. Let us stop throwing wrappers, paper or any waste on the street or in any other public places. Let us stop spitting in the street and in public places. Let us use the minimum amount of water required for our personal usage, and save resources, and the environment. Turn off the water while you brush your teeth or while you shave. Let us turn off the lights when we leave a room and try to use minimum electricity to save our environment. Open up curtains and let the sun light in. Embrace natural light as much as possible. Let us stop wasting food, and instead, try to feed people in need.

This month is a time for betterment. We make ourselves better by fasting from not only food and water, but also from negative thoughts. We must try to be closer to God. We can also make our community and our society better, if we follow these steps.
