Levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere have surged past the 400 parts per million benchmark and may not dip below it for “many generations”. According to the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO), 2016 will likely be the first full year to exceed the mark. The high levels can be partly attributed to a strong El Nino event.

Here are some comments that were shared on Facebook

Fred Eisinga: “Someday soon we will all get it... Sick from all the pollution we have allowed to happen...”

Daniel Riera: “We hit a detrimental milestone of 400ppm, which will now take thousands of years to lower even if we have government intervention. The higher it goes the worse it will be.”

Goo Rue: “Now we have left a world in much worse shape than we got it because of greed, laziness, disbelief, narcissism and busyness.

There is no economy on a dead planet, no hate or love, no gender, no race, no borders or agendas. This planet and the health of this planet is the most important thing...and after this American election...we have to make it THE most important thing... Get out of your cars, pay attention to EVERYTHING you buy, do whatever you can think of to reduce your carbon footprint with every purchase and gesture.”|

Gill King: “Feeling immense sadness - average global atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations will stay above the symbolic 400ppm for the whole of 2016 and reach new highs. When I first wrote about global warming, concentrations were about 330ppm. ߘ?We have severely damaged our climate’s ability to support life as we know it. #ClimateEmergency needs transformative #ClimateAction. #COP22
