A 2013 study called the Global Teacher Status Index, looked at the social status of teachers and found that there was great respect for teachers in many Asian societies, especially in China, South Korea and Singapore. For much of the Western parts of the world, levels of respect were lower.
The study conducted by the Varkey Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation that aims to improve the standards of education for underprivileged children across the world, found that among 21 countries surveyed, the profession of teachers ranked seventh among 14 respected occupations, just above social workers and librarians. However, in China teachers are considered as highly skilled as doctors.
