Dubai

A few days ago, I was walking in Dubai’s Deira area and came across a sight that got me concerned. I saw a cyclist, who wasn’t wearing any safety gear, weaving through traffic on the main road. Additionally, he was riding his bicycle while facing the traffic (as seen in photograph).

It seemed like he was a delivery person, as the bicycle had a small basket attached to the back. I have come across such behaviour several times in this area and around Dubai. There are clear rules in place specified by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) for cyclists and they are not allowed on the main roads. But, they break all these rules and cut between traffic just to save some time.

They need to be more careful and wear safety gear, such as helmets and reflective vests. They should also refrain from weaving through traffic on busy roads and instead use inner roads for their safety.

The authorities must be strict with these cyclists, not only for their safety, but also for the safety of the vehicles being driven by motorists alongside them on the road. They need to be educated about the dangers and the potential consequences of their actions, perhaps even be fined for being so reckless.

We must all take precautions to avoid any accidents from happening.

FACTS:

According to a Gulf News report published in January 2014, cyclists are not allowed to ride on pavements, except those clearly marked for cycles. Additionally, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) states that cyclists can only ride on the right side of the road and should use cycle tracks where available. The same report highlights the UAE Federal Law, which states that bicycles are also barred from venturing on main roads, but they can share internal roads with motorists.
