Who did they elect?
The US has elected Donald Trump who was not a politician, but a property developer (“Is the US in a post-literate presidency?”, Gulf News, January 8). He didn’t know anything about the social structure that the US was built on the shoulders of immigrants from other nations. People used to go and settle in the US as they felt safe, and this contributed to the country’s wealth. In the 2016 Presidential elections, Donald Trump, got the presidency with his own wealth. He inculcated hatred for immigrants and called terrorists, ‘Islamic Terrorists’, stating they are the worst enemies of the US.

Vat and small change
After my experience of shopping with VAT I realised that I am forced to pay more than just tax and this is profiting the shops and restaurants a lot (“Effects of VAT on individuals minimal: Ministry of Finance”, Gulf News, January 9). At the end of the day, a lot more is being spent from our pocket. The only way to solve this problem is by introducing 10 fil coins and I believe they did exist in the UAE, before. For example, if I buy something for Dh6, my tax will be 30 fils. The vendor will never accept 25 fils so I will have to pay 50 fils instead. If 10 fil coins are introduced, then at least I can get my amount back without any bickering with the vendor.

Unnecessary controversy
Bollywood playback singer Sonu Nigam is returning to the UAE once again (“Sonu Nigam in Dubai: ‘Why I quit Twitter’”, Gulf News, January 8). I wonder which hotel he will be staying in. I hope the organisers, know his recent controversy about the early morning Azaan (call to prayer) disturbing his sleep back home. He said it was ‘forced religionism’ and got him a good chunk of media footage. I hope he finds a hotel far away from a mosque so as to not to disturb the out-of-job singer’s sleep.

Don’t support criminals
The recent verdict from the Indian courts on the former Bihar Chief Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav for three and half years and one a million rupee fine, shows that the Indian Judiciary is alive (“Lalu Prasad Yadav gets three-and-a-half years in jail for role in fodder scam”, Gulf News, January 7). For more than two decades, this case has been going on in the court and a few days back, the verdict was announced. I am wondering why the opposition party is supporting the convict, despite the fact that he has been proven to be guilty. Politics always dominates and this is sad.

Turning tables
As far as I remember, Shane Warne held the dubious record of conceding 150 runs to take his maiden Test match wicket against India (“Australia close in on big victory in Sydney Test”, Gulf News, January 8). I think that record has now been taken over by cricketer M S Crane of England, who conceded 193 runs to take his maiden wicket at Sydney. As things stand, it may be a Herculean task for England to save the Sydney Test Series. But cricket being a game of uncertainty, tables could turn at Sydney?
