Shameful response after woman was assaulted
What a pathetic man, if he had a problem with this woman’s clothing choices, he should have averted his gaze (‘Watch: Outcry as woman assaulted for ‘wearing shorts in Ramadan’, Gulf News, June 22). He does not have a right to even touch that woman, let alone hit her. If he hit her on the grounds of religion, then he should first follow this rule, too. It’s unbelievable that the police set him free on the grounds that he was provoked.

He broke his fast
How can that man touch the woman like this? How he can grab her? That time, he forgot that it was the month of Ramadan, which ironically was his reasoning for hitting her in the first place. Ramadan gives us lessons of tolerance and patience.

In Islam, no one can force others to do anything and everyone is responsible for their own actions. Only governments have the authority to some extent to tell citizens how to behave. Give your faith a test and don’t look at what you don’t want to?

What consequences?
That’s the US where the police can kill as many African Americans as they want, but they will never be found guilty (‘Remember when a woman in the US live-streamed a police officer shooting her boyfriend?’, Gulf News, June 23). Instead they will be praised and even rewarded for killing them. History is repeating itself, the only difference now is that they wear blue uniforms and badges. Rest in peace and my condolences to the woman and her daughter.

Everyone owns a gun
I think the police was right in doing it, because in the US every Tom, Dick and Harry carries a gun and you never know when they will take it out and shoot at you. The police has to care for their safety. In this case, the police clearly told him not to take his gun out, but he did not listen. The police can’t wait till they get shot, so they had to act early.

Not even logical
The man clearly stated to the police officer that he had a gun, Mr Chris Ryan. Then, when he was asked for his licence, he got shot when he went to pull it out. If this had been a white man, this wouldn’t have happened!
Think about it. Would it even be logical for someone who is planning to shoot a police officer to first announce that he was carrying a fire arm? This was a trigger happy police officer with some really sick and racist stereotypes. The man’s young daughter was in the car. How heart breaking is that!

Campaigns for our children
International Day Against Drug Abuse was observed on June 26. Drugs abuse is another menace that needs our urgent attention. As per UN reports about 70 million adults are addicted to drugs of one form or another. The campaign against drugs has gained momentum since the early 1960s, but this has not helped reduce the number of users or peddlers in many countries around the world. Drug related crimes are on the rise and developing countries are the most affected.
Children should be taught at a young age about the side effects of drugs and how they should prevent falling into such traps. It has been observed that children who come from broken families or families with friction that they are more vulnerable to drugs.
More awareness campaigns need to be created so that the youth realise its bad effects and stay away from drugs. They should be shown examples of the celebrities who have lost their lives or careers due to an addiction. We have to curb this menace before our youth get dragged into its claws.
