Message of Hope

The United Nation’s International Day of peace is a celebration of hope and a promise for peace and solidarity (“Dubai marks UN Peace Day: ‘Tolerance is the backbone of all civilizations, religions and cultures’”, Gulf News, September 14) The UN exists as a symbol of betterment for the world and I believe that in troubled times like this, when there is internal turmoil in every country, we need to constantly aspire and look up to this organization. When we read about refugees in the newspaper and the atrocities they are facing, we also read about the work of both individuals and organisations who are trying to help them stand up on their feet again. There is hope and there is solidarity even in such adverse situations.

Achievement of sorts

The International Day of Peace is a reminder of the tragic incidents that are leaving a mark on the world. It reminds us of how small actions can make a huge impact in the long run. It is a day that highlights how far we have come on the path of peace, and how much more needs to be done. It is a symbol of unity and harmony among various religions, races, castes and creeds. It is a day that encourages us to set aside our differences and speak up for the disadvantaged groups. In this way we do our bit towards worldwide peace

No peace

There isn’t any peace in the world. Terrorist attacks occur almost in all continents on a daily basis and take the form of beheadings, bombs and more. There is unrest in countries like Sudan, Syria, Yemen, Congo, Central Africa, Iraq and Afghanistan. Celebrating the United Nation’s International Peace is not sensible since the world is not at peace anymore. It’s at war almost everywhere.

Questioning the UN

The United Nations should answer this question because the whole world knows what’s happening around the globe in the name of peace. Its better we ask the international body if we should celebrate this day, and if the answer is yes, then on what basis?

Different goals

The countries comprising the United Nation’s five permanent members control the entire organisation. I think they are just pretending to keep a steady pace, but they don’t care about humanity. They look for their own interests only. I hope they rethink their policy to keep the world safe at large. We need to stop celebrating such peace days and work for a peaceful life.

Important celebrations

At the pace of the current chaos taking place and the amount of fear in the world, we need to organise such events. If we could convert just one person’s mind and remove hatred and fear, it’s a victory for humankind.

Doing nothing

Celebrating the UN International Day of Peace with actually doing nothing for the people actually suffering is sad. I don’t have words to explain this act.

More needs to be done

I think such dates hold no meaning. In today’s day, where terrorists are on a rampage, and people are killing millions of innocent people, I think we need to do much more as a community. There should be ways in which we can actually help those in need. I agree that such dates represent a number that signifies the progress we have made as an international society, but I don’t think it is enough. There is so much that still needs to be done for Syria and Jordan and I think celebrating such milestones distract us from the actual problem.

All we have left

Yes, such dates are important because they are all that we have. Without freedom there is nothing in life. As a Muslim myself, we are at peace. May God bless us all and take away all the bad things in life.

True power not being tapped

The current situation of the world is appalling. I am shocked to see how far we have come as a human race, but how many mistakes we tend to make. The world is falling apart and I would like to see the United Nations play a bigger role in trying to curb war and stop people from killing innocent civilians. As an international peace keeping organisation, there is so much that the UN can do but is not. We hear about terrorist attacks every other day and it is terrifying. What is the point of celebrating a day that holds no real significance? I understand that the date acts like a reminder of how far we have come as global citizens, but there is still a lot of work to be done.
